The HTC One X is great but not perfect

The HTC One X just may the phone that can bring HTC back into the limelight. HTC have really struggled recently and it’s good to see them back in the mix with a device that really ticks a lot of boxes.

In Australia, the HTC One X is now released and there are some really good deals on the device with some carriers offering HTC One X Plans with relatively low plans.

The HTC One X is an excellent looking phone with a smooth polycarbonate body and huge screen with a surprisingly light weight. The device has a 4.7 inch making it the biggest smart phone device behind the Samsung Galaxy Note.

The device does have some issues with call quality. Past HTC devices I have owned have suffered from poor call quality and reception and this device looks to be no different.

The device however does make up for this in many other ways and we hope that HTC gets the credit it deserves for producing such an awesome device.

The specs of the Samsung Galaxy S3 apparently leaked

We are a mere few hours away from the announcement of a long awaited release from Samsung. The device that everyone has been has been waiting for is the Samsung Galaxy S3. It has been revealed that a supposed employee has leaked some specifications of the device.
It is rumoured to have a 1.5GHz quad core CPU with a screen measuring 4.8 inches and use Samsung’s famous Super AMOLED screen. The device is expected to feature an eight megapixel camera.

It’s coming – the Samsung Galaxy S3

It’s the event that Android fans the world over have been waiting for. Samsung have announced that they will be holding a press event on the 3rd of May which is anticipated to be the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S3. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is one of the most long awaited Android devices in history and is the only real competitor to the Apple iPhone 4S.

Recently, a Vietnamese blogger released a purported video of the device. The clip by the website indicated that the device has a big 4.6 inch screen. A screen of this size would make it one of the biggest smart phones on the market. The device was shown to have a resolution of 720 by 1184 pixels giving it a pixel density of 320 PPI. The devices appearance looks very much similar to previous versions of the device which is what you would expect.

The leaked video also showed that the Samsung Galaxy S3 will also have a new quad core chipset which is 1.4Ghz. If this is the case, it will be interesting how the device will perform power wise. The device is also expected to have a 12 Megapixel camera and 1080P video recording.

A device of such power consumption would obviously require a huge capacity battery and it does get this with a rumoured 2050mAh battery included.

There are lots of rumours floating about and we don’t have long to wait to confirm whether they’re true of false. In Australia, we can expect that Samsung Galaxy S3 plans will fly off the shelves.

The Nokia Lumia 800 is Nokia’s last chance

Nokia have finally released their first long awaited phone forged by a partnership with Microsoft. They announced the Nokia Lumia 800 which will be running the new Windows Phone 7 Mango 7.5 operating system.

The phone will be the start of make or break for Nokia who has struggled to keep up with Apple and Android in the last few years which has seen their market share erode from highs of over 50 percent down to less than 15 percent.

The Nokia Lumia 800 will be Nokia’s flagship phone running on a 1.4GHz Qualcomm chip with 512MB of RAM. The phone will have 16GB of memory available for storage of games, photos and applications.

The phone does not have a front facing camera but it does have an eight megapixel Carl Zeiss optics camera with HD video recording. The phone has a 3.7 inch AMOLED screen with Gorilla Glass and 800 x 480 resolution.

The Samsung Galaxy Note – A surprise hit

One of the most interesting phones to be designed in recent memory is probably the Samsung Galaxy Note. One of the main reasons for this is that it fulfills a need which no other device currently is able to fulfill.

The smart phone era has heralded in the convergence of many devices into the one device. Although the screens on smart phones are brilliant, the issue which cannot be overcome is the size of the screens on these devices are not good for watching movies and other media, they are simply too small. Many people have purchased other devices such as tablet PC’s which work well as media players however they do not have the same portability as a smart phone and therefore cannot go with you to as many places.

The Samsung Galaxy Note fills the gap in between these two types of devices and allows you to watch media on a good size screen with the portability of a smart phone.

The iPad 3 is really going strong

The iPad 2 has been such a popular device in Australia that carriers are now even offering iPad 3 plans with sim cards and data. The reason for this is so that they can offer iPad 2 users the ability to use their device out on the road and not be restricted to being in range of Wifi.

The iPad 2 has had a lot of success in Australia because it feeds off the success of the iPhone. In fact, the iPad 2 is a very similar device to the iPhone in regard to the interface and appearance. It actually does look very much like a big iPhone.

The iPad 2 has been able to suceed in a segment of the computer market which has been languishing for a very long time. Apple have been able to revive the tablet sector and bring some real innovation into the fold. Many other tablet makers are now playing catch up to Apple.

The North Korean Bomb Fizzles

fter all the hoo haa about North Korea launching a missile southward toward Australia, it has all turned out to be a fizzer. The newbie dictator Kim Jong Eun has been unable to get his rocket anywhere near the orbit. In fact, in broke up very quickly after take off and has crashed somewhere in the sea. The missile was meant to celebrate 100 years since the founding of the great nation of North Korea by his grandfather Kim Il-Sung.

The rocket blasted off from a newly built space station which is on the countries north-western coast. For a country where it’s people are dying of starvation and reportedly resorting to eating grass, they should not even be wasting their money on a so called ‘space station’.

Anyway, lets hope this embarrassment doesn’t mean that the dictator will try to prove to everyone that they can launch a rocket successfully. If he does we all may need to build our own bomb shelter just incase he doesn’t fail.

iPhone 5 prices have been rising?

Over the past month, I have been looking for a new iPhone 5 and strangely I’ve noticed that the price of the iPhone 4S in Australia seems to be going up. In fact most prices have been going up. When the iPhone first came out iPhone 5 plans starting as low as $49 would include the device for free. These days you cannot even get one for free on the $59 cap. Vodafone have gone one step further and have gotten rid of their infinite plans.

So what’s going on? I think the carriers are starting to realise that they aren’t making that much money on their plans. We have it pretty good here in Australia because we can get the device on a plan without paying an upfront cost unlike many other countries. For example, in the US you have to pay $200 on top of your two year plan for the 16GB iPhone 4S.

The HTC One X

HTC have had an extremely disappointing couple of years in the smart phone market that they once were big players in. Previously they had a huge amount of success with their Android devices and unfortunately they have not been able to keep the momentum going against the competition from Samsung and Apple. The Samsung Galaxy S and Samsung Galaxy S II have been the dominant phones in the Android arena causing HTC’s devices to take a back seat. If HTC had brought a device to market that was able to compete, they would be in a very different position right now.

The HTC One X is a new device that they’ve created which HTC are hoping will turn around their fortunes. The device is beautiful and sleek and is made from a polycarbonate uni-body. The device is only 8.9mm thick with a 4.7 inch display. The device does feel big in your hands but does not feel over sized whatsoever.

On the top of the device, there is a microphone jack and power button. On the left of the device there is a micro-USB port and on the right side there are the volume buttons.

The camera on the device is located on the centre back of the phone and does pop out slightly on the device.

In summary, it’s a great looking device with loads of great features. Whether it can bring HTC back to relevance in the smartphone market is yet to be known however with the Samsung Galaxy S3 coming out soon, it is highly unlikely.
